In our report of the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance we showed you an unlikely entrant, the unrestored 1933 Miller Race car. Its owner, George Albright from Florida, told us that it had been stored since the 1980s. George worked on the engine together with Jim Hunnewell, who was chief mechanic for Big Daddy Don Garlits. On Friday the 13th, they fired her up for the first time since 1984 and the Miller sounded just like an Offy. George and Jim took turns driving the car, starting it in second gear, as first gear and reverse were removed. They ran up and down the neighbourhood street back and forth, while kids on bikes cheered them on. The Miller got to approx. 60 MPH in 2nd gear and about half of the gas pedal was still left. The car will clearly go over 100 MPH. It’s quite a thrill to drive, with little if any rear brakes only, and on fifty year old tires!
