The Wengler Roadster (update, not Wengler, but Wendler !!!)

Miro Mraz reports about an oldtimer event in mediaeval Trnava a small town east from Bratislava, Slovakia. A car that you may expect at major events but not immediately. Here is the fabulous subcompact 'teardrop' coupe based on the BMW 319/1 by swiss coachbuilder Ernst Wengler. Extra interesting as the work of Wengler mostly is quite conservative. According to Miro possibly four were made ever. Is this the sole survivor?

Very adventurous & successful design,I would say.I wonder if pictures of it appeared in the prewar British motoring magazines. There were fairly similar designs built (one offs)on HRG & Vauxhall Light 12-6 chassis,& they could well have been influenced by this interesting continental design. The Vauxhall was bodied by Abbey coachworks,North London.

The front three quarter view is the most pleasing, the strange fall off from the A pillar backward are disguised!
The second photo with the gent in the blue shirt reveals the tiny proportions of the finished vehicle.
It would be interesting to put this beside (say) a Bugatti Atlantique !!

The car is too short to make a pretty fastback. It's just not to my taste even if I adore all 319's ever built.

Close but not quite what I would do with my 319. I considered pulling a fiberglass mold off my car and making a fastback version on a modern frame with an M5 motor. The rear section of this car drops off too fast and is too 'thick' on the upper section behind the rear wheel. Interesting attempt, though.

Can't help feeling he should have stuck with the conservative.
