Mystery thriller the Phantom Bugatti launches july 14

Press release

Author W.P. Truesdell announces the launch of his second novel, THE PHANTOM BUGATTI (274 pages), on July 14, 2024, on Amazon.com in e-book, soft and hardback covers. The Bastille Day release is a nod to the auto company’s legendary 1910 to 1939 run in Molsheim, France.

The mystery thriller interweaves historical elements with romantic brushstrokes, moving swiftly in the vein of Brendan Slocumb’s The Violin Conspiracy with a Bugatti roadster as the Stradivarius—and Roger Corea’s suspenseful The Duesenberg Caper set in the American Heartland landscape.
Jack’s cryptic discovery of a rare Bugatti roadster on his Grandfather’s Indiana farm could salvage or tank his troubled marriage. The challenge of restoring the rare car and solving its puzzling presence gives the middle-aged graphic artist a joie de vivre in his ordinary life. But his status-seeking wife Sally wants his inheritance sold for a posh suburban house.
His long trips from Cleveland to the farm on weekends and holidays become self-discovery escapes from the city and his troubled marriage. The rural community welcomes Jack, including the ex-cop owner of Pastimes Tavern and the appealing artist-proprietor of Rosie’s Café. They help connect his Grandpa Dreyfus to the Auburn auto factory, John Dillinger, and the village lore of the Phantom Racecar.
Fissures in Jack’s marriage worsen, building to a fiery confrontation.

As the million-dollar vintage car nears completion, Sally becomes unhinged in divorce court, where she vows Jack will not keep “that freaking car” even if it means killing him.
Mr. Truesdell published his first novel, For Love of Art and Ericka, in 2022 (Amazon and Lulu). His work on the ground-breaking Cleveland Museum of Art exhibition “Bugatti” inspired The Phantom Bugatti and an upcoming historical fiction about the Bugatti family.
A native Minnesotan, he holds degrees in theatre and playwriting from Illinois State University. Before turning to write full-time, he had an accomplished career in communications for major arts organizations in Chicago, Boston, Cleveland, and Kansas City, where his play Sparts Radio premiered.
