“L’Automobiliste” (UPDATE: not the real thing)

A few weeks ago we showed you the Paperknife Mystery, a letter opener found by May Garay. From the same source also came this magnificent drawing (click pic for enlagement). It’s called “The Automobilist” and was made by none other than famous artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. It dates from 1896 and is presumed to be the earliest example of the image of the automobile in the works of a major modern artist. The driver is supposed to be Gabriel Tapié de Céleyran, a nephew of Lautrec. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec only produced some twenty to 25 of these prints. Max will be taking his to a professional to confirm its originality. If so then it’s really a great find!

Hello PreWarCar, and thanks for the postings. Hope some fellow collector could bring me some light regarding the letter opener mistery.
But sadly I can confirm you that this Lautrec Litho is a mid 20th century high quality offset.
Although not a "great find", was at least a good one.
Kind regards,

Max Garay
