A Lanchester at Forty Pounds? (Upd. current owner found!)

Last week we received an enquiry from Terry Pettitt who would like to know the whereabouts of the 1934 Lanchester LA 10 that was in his possession from 1957 to 1960. Terry remembers seeing it advertised some twenty years ago, but last year the Lanchester and Daimler owners website mentioned that it had recently been sold by auction in Buxton (editor: probably H&H). The website showed that the Lanchester had featured in recent rally’s and had also appeared on Dutch Television. It then occurred to Terry that it could be the first car he owned for which he paid £40.00 and learnt to drive in it. Terry writes: “As can be seen the car had a two-seater body with dickey seats in the boot although if these seats were occupied the headlight beams pointed into the air. I believe originally the car had a fold down roof but at some stage it was replaced by a steel one. When I saw it advertised it had been changed back to original. I enjoyed my time with the car but as it needed a rebore and some other work I reluctantly sold it and bought a 1938 Morris 8. I think originally the car was sold new by the Northampton firm of W. Grose who were the agents for Daimler and Lanchester. The special aluminum and ash body may have been built by W. Grose or possibly Mulliners.” If this Lanchester is indeed still on the road Terry has a few photographs of it that may be of interest to the present owner. Can we find him?

The Lanchester with it's cabriolet body is very similar to one we rescued from a Dorsetshire wayside filling station back in 1959/60. See http://www.rick-ford.co.uk/75-0MOD.jpg. I attributed it's coachwork to Carlton, it was a full four seat drophead. It had individuality but was so ugly it was christened Yogi Bear. An 18hp model I have no records of it's identity, it was original in two tone green, regretfully the prop shaft U/Js were shot so progress could be maintained only in drive, any overun required the selection of neutral Such was motoring in the 1950,
