Edward VII was King of the United Kingdom from 1901. But before that, when he was still Prince of Wales, his mother Queen Victoria did not give him much to do and having much spare time, he dedicated his time to hunting and sports like golf and horse racing. It is not a surprise that he quickly got interested in the motor car. The oldest illustration we found is a cartoon of him from around 1898 on what could depict a Panhard-Levassor, but still with tiller steering. John Scott-Montagu, later the second Baron Montagu of Beaulieu, introduced him around 1898 to motoring by giving the Prince of Wales a spin in his Daimler. Montagu was the first Member of Parliament who used an automobile to enter the grounds of the Parliament. In 1900 we see Léon Serpollet driving Edward through Germany, to 'teach' him driving, but the Prince is photographed in the rear seat. Edward VII is reputed to have been the first member of the Royal family to have bought a car. It was a 1900 Daimler tonneau, which survived in Sandringham House in Norfolk, carrying the number plate A 7. It has a two-cylinder engine of 1527 cc and carries a Mail Phaeton coachwork. Daimler would stay the favourite marque of the Royals for a long time. When in 1902 he cruised the river Solent with the Royal Yacht Alberta, he visited Montagu again, and the classic picture of Edward in his 1901 Daimler was also taken at Beaulieu.
Still, in 1905, a 40 hp Mercedes was delivered, with Hooper bodywork and electric lighting. But no sources or pictures prove that Edward did drive himself, and it also was said that he was not very technical. After only a short reign, Edward VII died in 1910, leaving behind the term 'Edwardian', applicable to things that happened, when he was King. Most applicable to cars of course!
A special thank you to the Sandringham Estate for the picture of the 1900 Daimler.

Next week: 'Kings and Cars' Part 3.
Possibly his most intrepid ride was one reported by the Daily Mail that he took in Paris on Tuesday 13th April 1897: PRINCE OF WALES IN A MOTOR CAR. - The Prince of Wales indulged in a jaunt in an automobile car on Tuesday along the Champs Elysées and the banks of the Seine. He was piloted by M. Réne De Knyff, who is an expert automobilist, and accompanied by the Prince's aide-do-camp. The presence of the Prince in the Champs Elysées in this somewhat unusual vehicle was observed by very few”.
Some pilot: De Knyff became a famous racing driver subsequently!
