When exhibited for the first time at the 1901 International Motorcar Exhibition, the Singer Tricycle caused quite a sensation. A doctor from Liverpool even claimed that the benefits of the Singer meant he could do his rounds in one-fourth of the time and save the cost of one horse and a heavy monthly cab bill! The Singer Tricycle shown here is fitted with a Perks & Birch Motorwheel that was invented in 1899 and to which Singer acquired the rights in 1901. It was enclosed within a two-sided cast alloy spoked wheel (shades of Bugatti!). These photos were supplied by David Birch, grandson of Frank Birch. David would be delighted to hear from anyone with any more information regarding his grandfather’s marvellous invention. This Singer has been in the current family ownership for at least 60 years and will be auctioned by Brightwells at their next sale on Wednesday 18th March.
Update by Bob Cordon Champ: "Does this mean that the 'alloy wheel' of today is acknowledged as a British invention, so often mistakenly attributed to the Italian, Bugatti, a much later maker? Unless anyone can tell us of an earlier one? Incidentally, perhaps Mr. Birch can tell us of the role of Mr. Perks?"
