Jewels at Jaipur (Upd. Throne Rolls is 1912, not 1911)

The second Cartier ‘Travel with Style’ Concours d’Elegance was held on Saturday March 12 at The Jaipur Polo Grounds in New Delhi, India. As expected the weather was perfect during the afternoon. This year the rules differed a bit from the previous concours held in 2008. Every car had to be in running order and make one circuit at the event. Voted ‘Best Car of the Show’ was the ‘Throne Car’ a 1911 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost Dome Roof Limousine, owned by HIH Princess Ezra of Hyderabad (click main pic). But there was more, much more to feast your eyes on… for instance this wonderful typical ‘Indian Style’ Rolls Royce or a 1934 Packard Super 8 (yes, that’s singer –and jury member- Bryan Ferry posing).

Neither the show's venue nor the selection of cars were impressive...the 1st event was a better one...hope it improves the next time. Cheers!

Gentlemen & Ladies ,
Lets not get overawed by the media hype , there were better cars available for the show - but , as things in the subcontinent work out - personal considerations seem to have overruled common sense or as they call it now - CW - considering the car's presented against - the inventory that was avaialble to the organisers it would seem that the organisers wanted to cater to their cronies and customers .

Hope Cartiers has learnt the lesson this year to give us a spectacle next year which will be equivalent to the initial event.

I was at this event and felt it was a rather poor showing of cars considering all the Indian owned cars that could have been there. The over restored rolls in question had reportedly been subsidised by cartier, sadly this did not run to fitting period wheels, it still being on late 30's wheels. I hope they do not restore hyderabads other amazing cars in this manner! The best car was probably the ss jaguar, an interesting early car fitted with a two and half litre engine as supplied only to the Indian market. Brian Ferry was looking very old. On press day the drinks and food were free, the toilets were awful. The early Bentley was engine no 412, being owned by a delightful lady who was not allowed to drive it. The organiser of the whole event was an Englishman who usually does corporate weddings.

The gorgeous yellow Rolls-Royce Throne Car is a late 1912 car, chassis 2117, (on test 3rd October 1912), not 1911. It was sold new to H.H. The Nizam of Hyderabad. The body is a Semi State Coach by Barker. In 1937 the car was modernized for the Nizam's Jubilee. I have a rather poor quality photo of it in its modernized form, with ugly rounded fenders. It is pleasing to see that it has recently been restored with fenders that are correct for a 1912 car.
