Hershey for president ?

Now before you take us wrong, we have a deep love affair with the AACA fallmeet at Hershey. Driving down from New York and seeing the first overloaded pick-up going there our heart will jump with chocolate joy. Upon leaving after the Saturday concours the homesick fevers start before Hershey Park Drive is behind us. No question about our feelings for the the greatest autojumble in the world. Yet in a good relation one should be able to tell about what's bothering you as well:
Hershey you've got a problem. And we truly hope you can think up a solution.

This is the Hershey we like to see and what's still there, lively busy and addictive. In places like here at the north side of Chocolate all looks fine. Lots of stand, lots of people, great atmoshere. Only too bad that also truckloads of non-automotive stuff was being sold (when stopped the AACA checking like we have seen in other years?).  In the very same Chocolate field, but then on the south side - in earlier years the very heart of the show - we found vast empty areas that look... like an average parking lot. Or an asphalt desert.  Both pictures taken on Friday around 11 in the morning. So at a time that new arrivals hardly can be expected.  And this is not only in Chocolate. In the remote fields behind Stadium and Giant center the situation is similar. Come on AACA Eastern Region, don't let Hershey loose its muscles!

The issue is not new and it is known to most who comes here. We don't judge, we don't know for sure what causes are. But we strongly believe that finding a solution is no rocket science.

Already we're looking foward to next year's Hershey 4 - 7  October.  To meet good old friends once again. To enjoy even more of the fun we had this year. More great american food. More of  Cowboy John's autoparts. And the stand of an even bigger cowboy. And two wheeler cowboys (this Thor just did a full coast-t0-coast! the Motorbike Cannonball! Be sure to check his digital-nomad dashboard).  And sales promotions like you only will see once every four years. And life-size toys (only in America!). And 1 Million dollar tin in the car coral. And a 2 Million dollar dual cowl tourer at RM Sotheby's. And the miss of the year oily rag Packard Roadster, sh.t !) And museum quality collector stuff. And the sexiest Locomobile we ever saw  (how about a pointed twin ass like this, WoW! ).  And the rarest american made cyclecar, a 1914 Trumbull. And the coolest Marmon V16 two seater of the planet.

So Yes, YEs, YES ! Despite the things we we don't like, despite the issues we we must critisize, when it comes to voting, we would vote for this sweet little town in Pennsylvania.

Hershey we love you!  (tomorrow a  post-war Hershey report)

I don't think the non-automotive stuff is a big problem, my wife liked to look for "old" stuff, including clothing and collectible appliances. She complains that most of those sellers are gone.
A major problem is sellers who just don't turn up on Friday. Makes no sense, some buyers aren't there on Wed and Thurs. Why come all the way to Hershey and leave on Thursday? The AACA program is also a big problem, too hard to use and too hard to locate whatever stand you find in the program, they need to improve the coding system for the stands.

Sure, there's non-automotive stuff at Beaulieu, but what stuff! Live-steam model ships, Hornby trains, a propeller from a 1909 Bleriot, a turbocharger from a crashed Lockheed P-38 (not cheap, either) and tin signs from the pre-BR railway era. I'd rather look at that then yet another picture of Elvis Presley.

yes I missed out because of the forecast.
Weather turned out great! I ended up at a Porsche show in Allentown PA - Hershey has always been my favorite weekend when I am in the area.

I'm glad you had good weather, I was at Hershey for the first time in 1975 and it rained. A lot! The grounds weren't paved then and it was a sea of mud and there were rivers of water flowing through it in some areas. I was in water up to my waist crossing one of the rivers at one point. A lot of stuff got ruined that weekend. I went back in 1976 and it wasn't much better, lots of mud but no rivers!

Don't believe it's proper to try and compare Hershey and Beaulieu. Non auto stuff is always an issue and even though some vendors are not invited back, you'll see it pop up. Heck I've been to Beaulieu and had to wade through kitchen tools to find good old spark plugs for my collection. Looking at pics from this year there certainly were plenty of porcelain signs advertising tobacco and soap! I don't want the Hershey week to end but things do wind down by Friday PM. It's been a long week for most vendors and the focus does shift over to the car show for Saturday. Hershey and Beaulieu are both a collectors paradise and I long for the day when I can get back to Beaulieu once again to look for great brass lamps, spark plugs, MG, Morris and Triumph MC bits. In the meantime, I wouldn't miss a Hershey. Sunshine sure helps! I think if we could get more people in the old car hobby the world would be a better place!Happy collecting to all!

Hershey is great, but you do point out some issues that have been discussed at length on the AACA forum. Some believe that one of the fields should be designated for parking only. AACA states that a crew travels the field, taking pictures of spaces where people just park and not vend, and those people are supposedly banned from getting a space for two years. I don't see much of that happening. Set up is Tuesday, it's really become a Wednesday and Thursday flea market, Friday many vendors start leaving, and by Saturday of the show it's barely worth walking the flea market. I also agree that non-car items are out of place, but that's even harder to manage.

editor: some of these issues may have been on AACA, but we are talking to a less american audience. And as you know a large number of international visitors is flying into Hershey every year. The Parking lot solution is a good idea. Why is checking what's for sale not manageable? It is in other countries, so why not in the US? With the large numbers of AACA volunteers it should be possible to have a number of twin headed teams around each checking one field. Or what is the problem?

Not much asphalt when I was last there, only for the car coral, and no food vendors that I recall.
Boy, who cares, if I could have brought home that mouthwatering Thor!
Well, too bad I still remember the past.

I've been to Hershey many times. Know what I like about Beaulieu in September? No guns, no knives, no Elvis, no James Dean, no Harley Davidsons and no Marilyn Monroe. American redneck/car/gun/war culture is something I will no longer take part in. I don't know why they all seem to go together but I'm done with it. See you at Montagu's!
