The original Hohnstein Bergrennen (hillclimb) took place in Germany between 1926 and 1933. Many famous drivers participated, among them Caracciola, Stuck and Merz. The picture shows Swiss driver, Huldreich Heusser on his Steyr 5.0 litre. In 1933 a new racing circuit was constructed and used for the following six years. At the annual meeting of the racing teams in Merano, held at January 8th 1940, it was agreed that the Grand Prix of Germany would take place at this circuit, named the Deutschlandring and that it was to replace the infamous Nürburgring. This race scheduled for October 1940 never took place and the circuit never saw the wheels of a racing car. Today’s recreation of the hillclimb is not a race but a very interesting regularity rally for historic cars over almost 700 km in Saxonia with start and finish in Hohnstein. It takes place from July 11 -13. (RB)
