Glen Hague’s secret stash

As long as there are people who love and collect cars and automobilia, there will always be barn finds. And as long as there are collectors whose collecting behaviour is somewhat extraordinary, there will continue to be barn finds such as the Glen Hague Collection, which will be offered for sale in its entirely with RM Sotheby's from 2 - 5 September at its Auburn Fall sale.

The late Glen Hague, a Ford man through and through, was a salesman for the company and started collecting in the 1960s. As his grandson Josh explains: “Anything my grandfather could get his hands on, he would bring home, put it in a barn and not tell anyone it was there. Nobody had a clue just how many cars were in each building.”

They were in for a surprise when granddad passed away last year and the barns were opened to reveal some 70 untouched cars and much, much more memorabilia related to them. Amazingly, the majority of the collection was sourced locally in the state of Indiana and we think the number of late 1930s and early 1940s Fords in this sale must be unrivalled.

1931 Ford Model A Convertible Victoria

But let’s pick out just a few from the slightly older ‘oily rags’. We like this 1931 Ford Model A with its rare Victoria convertible body by the Murray Corporation of America. The car will need full recommissioning but that looks like a fun job to us, and a very rewarding one, too.

1930 Ford Model A Phaeton

This 1930 Model A Phaeton may need less work. Perhaps a dusting off and fresh fluids could even do the job? As lovers of patinated cars, it seems complete and okay to us. Could that green be the original first layer of paint? It seems it could well be.

1934 Lincoln Model KB Seven-Passenger Sedan

Last but not least, we want to share something a little different from the FoMoCo that made it to the secret stash of Mr. Hague: a 1934 Lincoln Model KB Sedan. What a lovely car this is, with its slightly faded black paint and yellowed whitewalls! It’s got a 414 cu. in. V12 under that long bonnet and space for seven passengers in the car, where they will be stuck by the beautiful wood inlay on the doors. Don’t even polish this one, just double-check the mechanicals and take the family for a spin!
