Fluid as a Drop of Water

In the early 1930s ‘carrossier’ Joseph Figoni began to make a name by no longer designing automobiles in the form of a ‘box’. He started to create coachworks as a fluid shape, or in the form of a drop of water. This short chassis 1936 Delahaye 135S Coupé was one of his earliest attempts. It had an all-alloy body and at the back a boxed extension to give it a longer, gentler slope. During the late thirties the Delahaye was raced by its first owner for which he had ordered several competition modifications, including a 135J competition engine, coupled to a Cotal preselector gearbox. After the war the car led a sheltered life in a Paris garage until discovered by its present owner who painstakingly restored the 135S to its original form. On May 2nd it will offered by WWG at their Houston Classic Auction. We think this 'teardrop' Delahaye will certainly do well at the Show Lawns of the World but of course would be the very best show off in real action:... cruising the boulevards of the Cote d'Azur.
