Fer’s Ferry Mystery (upd. Ballot? DFP? Crossley? Spyker? Bentley?)

Frequent contributor Fer Cools from Belgium often visits antique markets and almost always comes home with an interesting find. Last Sunday he found a real treasure, a color photo of the Dutch village Tholen on one of the islands in the south-west of Holland. Fer suspects the photograph dates from the early twenties, but has no clue about the identity of the sports car on the ferry. We think it looks British, but are also not sure. Can you tell what it is?

Today there's no ferry anymore, and the view from the modern bridge shows clearly how much the village of Tholen has changed over the years. Only the two church towers are still there.

The V-shaped "moustache" windscreen looks very much to the screens made by KAP in France.
Therefor I think it might be a French car of the early twenties with sportive alures.
I think it could be a Ballot 2LT by its V-schaped radiator with vertical sides.

I agree that it looks a little British, but maybe with a non-British body. The spare wheel is mounted on the wrong side for a car domiciled in Britain. The rear wings aren't typical of British practice, either.

I remember a ferry like this that was in use for years near the town of Lochem NL after the war to replace a damaged bridge.
It was powered by the ferry-man who, with a wooden implement, moved the boat along a cable from one bank to the other with his own weight and muscle power. Passengers often helped to speed up the crossing. I think in this photo the ferry-man is the man in white.

Lovely photograph...not sure what the car is but I'd rather have the carriage behind it!

At first sight it looked a bit like an early La Buire but for it to be one of those it would have to have a vertical central bar down the front of the radiator and some script as well. I do not think that it is a Bentley as the proportions are wrong and in any case the wheel base is too short for even an early three litre. However the radiator shape does look very much like an early vintage DFP, especially as these seemed to wear sporting vee windscreens at the time.

Could it be a Crossley?

Ferries of this type were a common site, crossing the Mekong, from Mukdahan (Thailand) to Savanaket (Laos) upto Jan 2007, when the second "Friendship Bridge" finally opened. (20 construction workers, including the chief Engineer died in 2005, when a crane collapsed and dropped a viaduct segment into the river)
The ferries were "BIG" and would often carry 6-8 trucks depending on size (some carrying containers), and deposit them on a sandy bank, to an unmade road, to struggle up the 10-15m rise to the other banks level, for such was the tidal change in the Mekong, at this location.
I used to sit at a little roadside cafe, overlooking the ferry, watching the comings and goings. Fascinating !

From this distance it looks like a Bentley, but could also be a Spijker.
