Celebrating 100 years of Lancia Lambda: To Fobello from Riddells Creek, Australia
The map of Iain's travels
COVID postponed the rally to celebrate the 100-year mark since Vincenzo Lancia test-drove the Lambda prototype from Turin to the Mont Cenis pass near Lanslebourg in France, but it wasn’t until 1922 that the first Lambda emerged from the factory, so Alison Ure from the UK rescheduled the event to take place between 31st August and 6th September just gone (2022).
Leanne and I decided that, due to the dramatic rise in shipping costs post-COVID, we would not ship our 8th series Lambda to Europe. At the last moment, however, and thanks to Hugo Modderman of the Netherlands, we were offered a favourable fare for passage and so, together with two other Australian Lambdas owned by John Brenan and Warwick Beanland, the Lambda left Australia to arrive at our starting point in Brussels, Belgium.
The round trip was to take us some 2800km from Belgium to Luxembourg, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany and back over the next three weeks.
The focal point of the rally was lunch at the Lancia family home ‘La Monta’ in the small town of Fobello, near Varallo (where Vincenzo is buried), in Italy. With some 60 cars attending there was no chance of all driving into the property located literally on the side of a mountain, so 12 Lambdas were selected at random to enter and park at La Monta. The Simpson 8th series was chosen and so with eight(!) on board, we made our way up the switchback driveway to fulfil a personal dream of mine.
The follow-on tour organised by Sebastien Simon took us to the Engadene region of Switzerland, using the town of Celerina near St. Moritz as a ‘base camp'.
We saw some of the cars participating in the Motorsport Rendezvous during the St. Moritz Car Week cruising the streets of St. Moritz in the rain!
For those of you who have never experienced the joy of driving or owning a Lambda: it is never too late.
Our thanks to Alison Ure, the Lancia family and the Valsesia Lancia Story group for an excellent rally in Italy, to Bart Kleyn and Koen Keutgens for arranging our ‘Tour from the North’, and to Sebastien Simon for the Swiss tour.
My thanks to my darling wife Leanne for putting up with my old car ‘disease’ and to my dear dad Graeme Simpson for passing on this wonderful illness.

Iain, You forgot to say that in one day we left Lake Geneva, did the Grand and Petit Saint Bernard and finally the Col D'Iseran to finish in the mountains soon the border between Italy and France.
