Sporting Singer Back on the Road

After MGs, the Singer Nine must be one of the best-liked PVT sports cars. Popular in its day, survivors are relatively plentiful and there’s still a small supply of them out there waiting to be restored. They can be rewarding projects, too, as this 1933 Sports Tourer, recently restored by a lifelong Singer enthusiast, goes to show.

After spending the 1950s in Somerset, where it was apparently trialled, by 2016 it looked like a patinated car which could be fairly easily restored. Looks are so often deceptive, though, and the car’s external appearance gave no indication of the fact that the partly-rebuilt engine had been bodged, all the other mechanical parts were dismantled, and the ash frame was rotten.

This wasn’t insurmountable to the restorer, but the project moved in an interesting direction when he decided to hand it over to StarterMotor, the Bicester Heritage-based charity which gives young enthusiasts the chance to experience what it’s like to drive and maintain old cars, to put the finishing touches on it.

Although most of the restoration was completed by the owner, from now on its sustained health is the responsibility of StarterMotor’s beneficiaries. On loan to StarterMotor for two years, there can scarcely be a better way to introduce young people to the delights of prewar motoring.
