Counting GMC year rings. ( UPDATE: 1920-23)

Bruce Stewart sends these photos and request:

"These two photos are a Samson 3/4T truck 1915-20 by GMC in the Samson Plant in Janesville, Wisconsin.
It was owned by my father Robert and used on the farm in northern Illinois. The log is from his brother Donald's adjacent farm. Can anyone id the exact year of manufacture?"

Looks like my info is close enough. We also had a Samson tractor, but no pic for that. When I was 5 all that was left was an engine, frame and four wheels all covered with rust. Good to play on though!

Hello,
The Samson truck was made by General Motors 1920 through 1923. This appears to be a Model A Series that was made in 1920 to 1922. The Model A was a Cab-Over-Model. The 1923 New Series 15 was more conventional with front seat behind the engine.
There was also a Samson tractor that was originally made in California and was taken over by General Motors in 1917 and was available until 1923 when both Samson Trucks and Samson Tractors proved unprofitable.

Samson trucks were produced in 3/4 and 1 ton versions for 1920 thru 1923. As the introduction would have been in 1919, some could have been registered as 1919. It is doubtful that there was much if any change during their production, thus exact year dating may be impossible.
