Think ‘cowboy’ and no doubt the name ‘Tom Mix’ springs to mind. One of the great American legends, he starred in numerous Westerns, portraying the ever principled and straight forward cowboy, fighting unprincipled sheriffs and outlaws. In the process he made millions, spent it all and then some. In 1937 he bought this Cord 812 phaeton and drove it with the flair and abandon which characterized his life. Sadly he also rode it to his death, as in 1940 he missed a warning sign and drove into a wash. The myth of Tom Mix lived on and his Cord was carefully preserved. It still has details like the “TM” embossed leather stone guards on the rear fenders and a clumsily preserved partial “Tom Mix” licence plate frame. This epitome of an American legend will be auctioned by Bonhams & Butterfields during their sale at the Quail Lodge on August 14th. And yes, the Cord comes with a life-sized wax representation of Tom Mix! (photos courtesy Bonhams & Butterfields)
