Changing the route: Bergsma is history (April 1 UPDATE by Editor JB)

After almost 15 years the end has come for editor-in-chief Joris Bergsma. Yesterday evening, at just after 23.00 GMT, the Pre-war Post-war Publishing team came to an agreement to end their relationship in good order.

Within the last few months an untenable situation developed as the opinions expressed by Bergsma increasingly emphasized on the profile and image of PreWarCar and PostWarClassic. This saw the PWC head offices in Amsterdam divided into two camps. Bergsma's increasing interest for unrestored cars, saloons and 'bread and butter' vehicles were considered as counteractions to the business opportunities for PreWarCar and PostWarClassic.

The appointment of a new chief-editor is expected later this week. One thing is sure, though: the future will be bright. The emphasis will slowly but surely be directed towards the top end of the classic car scene, with more concours reports from throughout the world and an increase in high-end restoration work.

It's been a very tough decision and the team, which from now on will be running both PreWar Car as PostWarClassics websites without Bergsma, want to thank Joris for the fantastic work he did for both websites. Joris has made an invaluable contribution to the pre-war car scene and due to his efforts thousands of cars have come into the hands of new owners, a large number of who have been made enthusiastic through his webpages. We wish him all the best for the future.

UPDATE , April 1, 2015 15.03 : Thank You all so much for your touching and heartwarming responses! For the more than hundred comments. For the dozen of phonecalls from various countries. Plus some 30 personal emails this morning. The friendliest push in the back we received since the SAH E.P. Ingersoll award we received in 2003..!   Sorry if we tackled some of you with our 'news' a bit hard with this year's April 1  feature. Look at it this way, we try to serve you well 365 days a year and one of those days is just for our own pleasure. This time with the pleasant side effect - like one of you wrote -  that it gives very good support for our scruffy strategy approach. So let's pick up where left of. Tomorrow is April 2.

Thank you for your support!
Joris Bergsma, founding editor

Glad to know its an April 1 joke, problem is that when I read it the date was March 31 in NY. I couldn't figure it out, and especially didn't like the heartless attitude of the announcement. I like old rusty relics and plain old sedans, and heart stopping Figoni bodied cars too! Joris has always been attentive and helpful to me, so glad this was only a bad joke!

I have for many years been in contact with you on PVC and have always been so well treated.
Hope you find a new way to start a site I'm sure that you will get many who follows you.
I think that PVC has had a nice mix of the right kind of vehicle so I can not understand why it turned out like this.
Hope you can advise your email address so that we can keep in touch about our Talbots.

Not a good decision likely to turn off the majority of ordinary enthusiasts. Perhaps a survey of users should have been carried out.
If in future all we get is millionaire over restored cars most will stop visiting and will look for a new site which actually represents our interests.

I noticed the subtle change of image, for the two sites, for Joris, Colour Postwar car image and Black and white for Prewar car, that should have been a big enough clue for us !
YES ! the Mystery is solved !

The news-title "Bergsma is history" is unprofessional, unnecessary and offensive - whoever okayed this press release owes Joris and his followers an apology.

I have no problems with the term "bread and butter cars" - since it describes honest, everyday cars designed and used by people who have to watch their money and cherish their cars for what they are and not just as an investment.
As others have pointed out there are plenty of over-hyped sites tooting overpriced cars - where you can see the same dealers adverts umpteen times over. It appears I'm not the only one who regrets the Pre-war / Post-war teams decision to go "Up market". But if that's they want to go - so be it!

Dear Joris, I always found the eclectic mix of adverts and you and your team's well-written and amusing posts an entertaining way to cultivate my passion and learn more about prewar cars. As the other posts confirm, Pre-war driver-owners owe you a lot and most will continue to support your efforts re originality, preservation and having fun with like-minded fans. Take the time you need to consider your options and come back into the public space. I and many others will be waiting for your return.

I was shocked when I opened 'prewarcar' today. The black and white picture of Joris with the words "Bergsma is history" jumped into my eye like an obituary. And that is what you probably wanted it to be. The conflict must have developed into hate. Why is it that all great people with the right mind always end up standing alone, not understood, and being pushed away by newcomers with commercial interests? Be assured Joris, you are not alone with your thoughts on the movement of veteran and vintage cars. Best of luck for the future directors of "prewarcar", they will need it. I owned top cars myself, but now enjoy driving lesser valued cars even more. They procure much more fun, and I feel less isolated from the others enjoying themselves.

You're taking the soul out of these sites. The current formula is unique; punditfacts mixed with a market where very expensive/exotic cars are advertised alongside the 'bread and butter' cars on a site that seems to have missed the last 10 odd years of website makeovers. You have a perfectly fine niche and you're alienating your audience by trying to move up market. There are plenty of other websites that do a good job at that and where the majority of your partners already have a presence that will be hard to match. In my opinion Joris was this site and this site is a reflection of his personality. By ousting him you will become just another destination when scavenging the market - not the first read of the day to have with your coffee... Sad!

I trust that this article has content due to the date rather than fact.
Rememer there are ore of "us" than of "them" with ordinary "oily rag" unrestored cars than those in better financial situations with pristine exotica vehicles who might well not get them muddy at all and if they do surely their man will wash it off.
If this is the truth and not an April Fools joke may I express my gratitude to Joris for running what to me has been a most interesting and informative insite into both the Pre and Pos-War world of motoring, when I look at the site I can easily get lost in what my wife refers to as "Car Porn". Best of luck Joris if this is not a joke which I sincerely hope it is!
Happy Motoring.

The new editor should be an exact replica or a look-alike , of Joris at least today.

Well, this is shocking, Joris was PreWarCar.com. You can't take away Donald from McDonalds, 47 from 4711, Hein from Heineken, or can you? I plan to start an online petition till this is reversed.

What a great pity to hear that Joris has been ousted. It is of course hard in any organisation when there are conflicts of options. Personally I could not give a dam about 'the top end of the market of the classic car scene, with more concours reports and an increase in high-end restoration work'. This is only to appease the dealers and restoring firms who the majority of enthusiasts only use sparingly I would have thought. There are many, many publications out there touting their advertisements through their so called articles/road tests, and I now refuse to buy them. Lots of people enjoy articles on the unrestored cars, saloons and 'bread and butter cars' as well as the 'top end' of the market. That is what, I would have thought, the old car movement is all about. Good luck Joris in the future and thank you for many enjoyable evenings browsing through this site.

I'll be saddened to see an end to the wit and poinient remarks from Boris. Having a strong opinion is always better than just going with the flow though I can appreciate that business also need to follow the cash flow. I wish you well Joris wherever you end up, its been a pleasure reading your anecdotes on a daily basis.

I am SHOCKED and deeply saddened by the news.
I own a modest bread and butter unrestored classic vehicle, a Rover P4.
And to have something like this happen, is unforgivable !
Is this magazine to become the mouthpiece for the Exhorbitantly priced Amelia island / Pebble Beach crowd ?
If so, then it won't be seeing me for very much longer.

I'm sad to hear this. Joris has done a magnificent service to our hobby and the balance between the top and bottom ends, until recent times, has been just right. Whether I'll continue to enjoy PWC is doubtful: the world of greed, megadollars and obsessive restoration isn't for me.

I know everyone will wish Joris success in whatever comes next!

I am probably not alone in being very sad to think that Joris won't be around any longer. I met him at Beaulieu not longer after prewarcar started and was happy to have cards and publicise the website on my stand.

HOWEVER if this is to become yet another site for cars unaffordable to the ordinary person, be they restored or as found then sorry count me out. I think you may find you lose a lot of your loyal following who are interested in, as you put it, 'bread and butter vehicles'. That is insulting an patronising.

Do you have the nerve to publicise this letter?
