A Bugatti T32 Tank in the 1927 GP of Germany? (update: 1927 Bignan Tank)

Klaus-Dieter Hein from Emmingen (Germany) writes: "We collect beautiful old cars and have built us a small hall and with a beautiful picture on the wall of the Grand Prize of Germany 1927 which we have acquired this image from Ullstein Verlag, which was sold as showing the 1928 Grand Prix. Now we like to know which vehicles appear on this picture. Though it was stated that this was the Grand Prize of 1928, the more we researched, we found out that it is (most probably) the race from July 17th, 1927.

Next what we found is a summary of drivers and starting positions on the internet. Unfortunately, only partially with vehicle types and starting numbers. Some of these we have already identified. Now we have probably discovered a Bugatti T32 tank on the screen... (in the background of trhe photo)?! However, we find nowhere a clue that this car did start. Maybe you can help us or your readers? Many many thanks!"

Clearly the Bignan tank, as one can see the radiator sticking up though the front bodywork. Plus the windscreen is like pictures of the Bignan. Know to have raced in 1927 too.

Never mind the 1927 Bignan "Tank" - what about the 1887 Aston Martin that's just appeared for sale on Prewarcar.com!

It was Bignan.
Translation from Polish relations about German Grand Prix 1927: "Bignan, in comic ultra-racimng robe, served only as a subject for jokes. It was said correctly about this car that is a compromise between the tank and the popular German one-cylinder Hanomag"

Personally, I think the green numbers written over the cars before the race are a more interesting issue, firstly because for many of them, it's totally unnecessary, but for number 8, extremely curious to say the least.

Bignan plutot;
Pas Chenard et Walcker. Ni la 2 litre ACF de Lyon de 1924, ni les 1100 des 24h du Mans
(voir http://chenard-et-walcker.blogspot.fr/search/label/tank)

Bignan yes, but not Chenard and Walcker

@ bob king:
The car titled as "Tank" is the one standing behind the Bugatti T43 (start number 15) in the background.
T39: A very similar car visited Montlhery this year:

The 'Bugatti tank' is a 1925 Grand Prix de Tourisme Type 39 Bugatti of 1493cc (8cylinder GP car with touring bodies).It will be the car of Willy Cleer which is listed with that capacity engine. Its chassis number will be either 4603, 4605, or 4606. 4604 and 4607 were already in Australia.

I`m shure it is not the Bugatti, which was built in 1923, and had`nt been too suxcessfull. And nobody would race in 1927 with a "outdated" car against the SSK`s and T35`s. More likely its a Chenard & Walker tank, which was intruduced in 1925, only two years before that race.

I`m shure it`s not the Bugatti Tank ( have a look to the rear), this cars were built in 1923 and after the introduction of the T35 out of style with only one survived, built in a special. So nobody would race with an old car against SSK`s and T35`s.Its more likely one of the Chenard& Walker tanks, which first appeared in 1925, only two years before the race.
