A Bugatti T40 Aerodyne Mystery?

Mr. R. Rodier from France came up with this interesting set of three photos, shot in August 1928, 'somewhere' in France. An intriguing 'aerodyne' coachwork like this, probably based on a type 40 must be known. And probably the owner as well. A first lead is of course the registration plate 99-46 -?- X3. Anders Svevelt already found another photo of the car to be found at the archives of the Bugatti Trust. Who can fill in the details about this Molsheim mystery?

I think that this photo shows the same car.
The file was called "Bugatti T40 Fridrich" when I saved it back then.
So maybe this was indeed related to Ernest Friederich?

"Is Paul Friderich mentioned as an owner related to Ernst F.?"

Yes - son of Ernest. And sister of Renée, who was killed during the 1932 Rally Féminin Paris-St-Raphaël. Paul also competed post-war under the banner of Écurie Blanche et Noire, driving the unique Delahaye 155 monoplace.

The Bugatti Trust photo shows a very rough finish to the bodywork over the rear axle. The generally "unlovely" appearance makes me wonder if this was a home made lash-up to provide transport in hard times (during the Occupation perhaps?)

Frankly, the jokey sailor hats and the very basic lines of the "bodywork" make me think this is a shade tree mechanic's idea of coachwork.
Perhaps the Bugatti Trust archive will tell us more.

I don't think its a mobile in picture 3...I think its a box of smelling salts or similar. Picture 2 shows the driver's head hanging limply out of the window suggesting he has fainted. Picture 3 shows him revived by a kind gent who has placed smelling salts (on the end of his finger) under the driver's nose.

....I wish to state that I am very pleased that Mr.R.Rodier has taken the trouble to send in these three very historic photographs for us all to enjoy and thanks also to PWC for publishing them.

Picture 3 shows the young man holding what looks like a Galaxy S4 mobile. I believe this car to be another Pur Sang from Argentina ! Only my opinion, of course....

It is indeed a Type 40. Found it on Bugatti Trust's photo archive with some further information:
