Bringing in the Mail! (UPDATE: DH-61 Giant Moth)

Don’t click on the photo yet! First make a guess of the identity of this strange device. Think you know what it is? Wrong! It’s a picture of the arrival of the first aerial mail in Brisbane, Queensland on April 23rd 1929. We know that the name of the pilot was P.H. Moody, but we haven’t got a clue about the make of the airplane. Just imagine sitting up there out in the open, while the passengers are comfortably inside. (With thanks to Barry Stalker for the photo)

On 17 April 1929, Qantas brought two new DH61 aircraft into service to inaugurate the 710km Charleville-Brisbane service, the first direct link to the coast. This brought the total route network to nearly 2380km.

It is definitely a DH-61 Giant Moth...10 built, 3 to Australia, and they served well during the 1920s.

Hi!
The plane is probably a De Havilland DH-61. You may find this photo and others of the plane named "Apollo" on this incredible website:
