The New Delhi Mystery.

Dave White sends this photo from India: "Recent  appearance of a long lost car in the back streets of New Delhi. The owner intends to restore it.  I know what it is, now you tell me."

editor: Dave, to be honest, we haven't the slightest of what it may be but we love it! What a wonderful car and especially in this appearance, extra attractive. You don't tell us too much about the (hi)story that comes with the car and its re-appearance. Maybe you want to tell us a bit more about that? Then there is this other issue that we need to explain. It's about Mystery Cars and about Quiz Cars.
Mystery Cars are photos that show unidentified cars and we ask you to jump in to help.
Quiz Cars are photos that show cars of which we in general perfectly know what they are. And you are invited to say what it is.
Dave White who sent us the above photo didn't tell us what car it is. In the case he would have done so, we could have made a quiz out of this photo. But now it is a little mystery. Be it a beautiful mystery (one of the senders in our 5000m edition competition).    ( comp5000 )

The car is indeed a Lagonda V12 Rapidė once owned by the Maharaja of Jodhpur. The car is parked legally in a public parking space. The no parking sign is in fact illegal because it's on private property and not a council installed sign. The owner of the shop probably painted it to warn two wheelers not to park on the pavement in front of his shop. The owner of the car has no intention of restoring the car cosmetically anytime in the near future, but he does intend to recommission it for regular use.

It Is a superb photo and I had to send it to you. It is as Harit and Sujit explain the ex Maharahja of Jodhpur V12 Lagonda Rapide and as Ralph Cook tells us the short chassis with factory bodywork. It is absolutely original and unrestored, still well cared for and of course known to a select few in India. Like all lost then found again cars, then lost yet again cars, there are always a select few who know of their current hiding place. Just occasionally they are exposed to the wider world and the next generation can know of their continuing existence.

No Parking ?

editor: Arnoud, obviously this is the garage of the Lagonda owner. Without the sign he couldn't get in.

Lagonda LG 6 Rapide (Factory body) I say a 6 cylinder car as no sign of off-side exhaust, unless it's missing. Looks like someone started to strip some of the paint and got fed up.

This "mystery" is a well known car in the Indian VCC circles, residing in Delhi for maybe 20 years after it's stint in Ahmedabad. Lagonda V-12 probably ex-Maharaja of Jodhpur.
It has been lying unrestored like this since it was purchased and is no doubt a grand car.
We all wait for it to be back on the road.
Typical of us in India, we ignored the writing on the "wall": No Parking.

This is a 1939 Lagonda Rapide on the short, 10ft 4in wheelbase, wearing the excellent two seater drop head coupe body designed by factory stylist Frank Feeley. A similar car, in fully restored condition, was offered for sale by Kidstons a year ago. That one had rather different chrome trim, but when buying a car like this I guess the customer could pretty well have what he wanted (Did any ladies buy one of these?). I never cease to amazed by what just 'turns up' in India.

To the best of my knowledge this car is well known, certainly in collector car circles in India (see team-bhp.com).

I'd say it's a Lagonda Rapide V12, circa 1937. One of the many fine British cars that were shipped out to India over the years.

1938 Lagonda Rapide with what appears to be a factory body. Is this one of the 12 or so built? I cannot tell if it is a 6 or a 12, no matter, this is one hell of a car to find on a back street of New Delhi.
