Angouleme is waiting! (Upd. 1939!)

Pete Giles was kind enough to send in these photos. Pete exhanged a pleasant and easy life in the UK for a 'combersome' existence as exile in hot & dry France not too far from Angoulême. You may have heard of the Circuit des Remparts where races have been held since 1939. We are not sure about the vintage of the photo above. But the last car - an Amilcar C6, nr 16 - possibly will help to date the shot. There is one photo more showing the same  C6 Amilcar and we added an enlarged detail of the main photo. Possibly other cars can be identified as well.

Every year the memorial races are held, this year 14, 15, 16 September. It is a fabulous event, so if you have the chance...

Oops! Correction!

The Coupe de la Commission was run the Sunday after the Circuit des Remparts. Even so, those are definitely the Gordini Simcas!

What an interesting photograph, raising interesting questions! I think this must have been taken during practice for the 1939 race. The #16 Amilcar C6 would therefore be that of 'Toto' Guyard. In the background we can see a car numbered 4: this is also an Amilcar, the 1.3 litre C0 of Maurice Mestivier. Guyard's and Mestivier's cars can both be glimpsed briefly in Marcel Picard's wonderful 19-minute home movie of the race:

(Download the file and view it in an FLV viewer to get the full effect!)

The cars numbered 16 and 18 in roundels were presumably there for exhibition purposes only, since as far as I know, they were not entered: they are two of the Gordini-modified Simca 508Cs which had raced earlier in the month in the Coupe de la Commission Sportive at Reims and still bear their numbers from that race. #16 was raced there by Le Sorcier himself and #18 by Marcel Contet.

This was taken on the 1939 race.
I have both photographs given to me by Francis Gasseling of my local vintage club at Champagne Mouton, just north of Angouleme.

Amilcar Salmson Register.
