As soon as the automobile was launched, other inventors tried to create a vehicle that that could both drive on the road and float on the water. Most designs were unsuccessful (in other words: they went to the bottom of the river!). One that did work was ‘La Comète’. After training as a mechanic, Ulysse Texier de la Caillerie founded his own taxi company and opened a garage. He then took over the running of a hotel in Poitiers. In 1928, in the town of Secondigny (Deux Sèvres), he had the idea of building a light vehicle that would be able to travel on land and in water, and intended to offer his design to the army. The five-horsepower Comète was completed in 1932. A certain Colonel de Gaulle showed great interest in the project, but the army did not take it on. Together with the legendary Trippel, La Comète will be part of a special retrospective of amphibious cars during the next Rétromobile in February 2012
