An Abernythe - Balbeggie Mystery (update: 1910 Lancia Gamma)

Alasdair Nicoll wrote to us: "I am trying to find out the make/model of this vehicle. It has a London registration and a UK AA 1911 badge, if I'm not mistaken. The photos were taken on the B953 in Perthshire, Scotland, on the road between the villages of Abernyte and Balbeggie. I have no other information. Would love to find out what they were driving!"

Editor: Very nice set of photos Alisdair. As for the car, the radiator is quite generic in appearance but could be Berliet, the body however seems more of British making. Aside all that we truly like the elaborate rearaxle damping allowing for the large company in the car.

Hi all - I'm the contributor of these images. We've identified the occupants of the car and the event - March/April 1913, military maneuvers of the Black Watch, near Abernyte. We believe the car is a 1912 De Dion Bouton Roadster!

editor: highly unlikely Alisdair. De Dion Bouton had quite different radiators in that era. What makes you think of DDB?

Hi Craig---- It seems that some did & some didn't. It was a brass rectangular one where is normal to have it on the radiator & some pre great war Deltas had a round glass enamel one similar to a Lmabda. Ref Lancias by Michael Frostick.
Cheers------jak.

Jak, from what I can figure out, Lancia didn't have their badge on the radiator before 1911.

I'm owner of a Lancia 1910 Gamma in good coditions with an american very nice body of a know (there) coachbuilder. On the radiator there was not badge becouse was in an other place (as all the Lancias of this age) as you can see on the fhoto the rectangular black plate on the right part of the car. Very prbabily the body can be made in U.K. or U.S.A., looking at the style of the mudgeguards. The radiator is exclusive of the old Lancias.

Not a clue as to the make of car but those guys are army officers with army personnel driving - using a commandeered car during WWI? Many wealthy owners gave their cars for the war effort.

Early Lancia?

The radiator looks to big for a Beta so I would think a 20hp Gamma of 1910.
This model has quarter eliptic rear springs, the extra elaborate rearaxle dampers are an aftermarket accessory that contains coil springs.

The chassis crossmember above the fuel tank (second picture) is narrower in the centre. An unusual feature, does anyone recognize that?

I can't help but wonder if there isn't a photo missing of what they were all looking at across the glen ?

It looks Italian, could be Fiat, Lancia or Itala.
