Is it a La Perle mystery? (Upd. Oui! 1930 La Perle 1500 Supercharger, GP ACF Pau)

When we saw this photo, our first response was Amilcar C6. But the car looks a bit funny. And on closer examination we found the radiator shell is totally wrong. The front brakes don't look very Amilcar either.  The chassis is funny. And so on. The photo comes from a photocollector in Italy and Siegfried Otto Hepp sent it to us on his turn. Maybe it is a racing special made up of whatever was around. Or is it one of the dreamcars on our if-ever shortlist: one of the very rare six cylinder La Perle racers. It is a marque you hear very little about. According to Georgano they made 2 and 4 cylinder cyclecars and in 1924 came up with the six, a 1,5 litre with shaft driven single overhead cam. The supercharged racing version is said to have been able of 105 mph... A real Amilcar C6 competitor. We truly hope you keep our perly dream alive. But we won't  keep our eyes shut for the truth. So come up and tell us.

Editor's Update: Wow, amazign to see this knowledge on la perle so readily availabel. Be sure to check the updates including a last (?) surving 6 cylinder la Perle in Argentina.

this is a pleasure to look at 1500 6 cyl GP ACF La Perle 1930 at PAU;the 6 cyl ACT engine was designed and certainly made by the clever Nemorin CAUSAN.Driven by CASALI this car finished twelve behind a lot of Bug (Etancelin been the winner at 145 kmh); The La Perle made by LEFEVRE finished second in 1500 class

It really seems to be the 6 cylinder La Perle that even hat a Cozette no. 8 blower (following Serge Pozzolis article in L'Album du Fanatique no. 9, page 25) which shows obviously the same car at the GP du ACF in 1930. Pozzoli told us that in 1931 Frantz Lefèvre who then lived at the Côte d'Azur then put a more modern roadster body on that La Perle chassis but probably non of these cars survived...

Pretty sure it is the six-cylinder La Perle of 1924.
Isn't it the same car as this:

Yes it is definitively a 6 cylinders La Perle with supercharger. Some other pictures of this car were published in "l'Album du Fanatique" n°9 from 1968. This car ran the GP ACF in Pau in 1930

A 6 cylinder La Perle, with compressor, exists here in Buenos Aires, see more at: http://www.vivenaqui.com.ar/voluno_2.php
This appeared in a local car magazine in the '70 and now has been published as a book Viven Aqui "They Live Here" in three volumes that include the stories of many other important cars that then were in Argentina, unfortunately most have been exported long ago, but not the La Perle that remains in the hands of an Argentine collector.

Dear Joris - if a photograph can make one of your dreams come true then you are in for a happy time! The car is indeed a racing La Perle, as competed in the 1930 GP de l'ACF at Pau. This race was run over a 15.8km road cicuit to the east of Pau, not the much more familiar one that winds its way through town's streets. The event is probably best-remembered for the achievement of Tim Birkin driving his rather unsuitable four-and-half-litre supercharged Bentley into second place, rather overshadowing Philippe Etancelin's win at the wheel of a Bugatti. The La Perle did not finish the 25-lap race, retiring after a spin into the straw bales. It was driven by one 'Casali' (perhaps someone can tell us more about him?) which may possibly explain the Italian connection.

Sweet dreams - Malcolm Jeal

If it is a La Perle, then the race number would fit the car driven by Lefevre in the 1924 GP de l'Ouverture. However, the background doesn't look at all Montlhéry-esque.

And it may just be the flat cap, but the driver looks a lot like Henry Segrave to me!
