On the one hand, the question of what makes the Amilcar attractive isn’t one that really needs to be asked. The appeal of the skimpy, uncluttered body sitting on its chassis with a pert, playful stance is instant and obvious. In sampling the sprightly acceleration and precise handling, one also learns how they are as much of a joy to drive as they are to behold.

On the other hand, it is a question that should be asked because those answers are simplistic and impersonal. For any individual Amilcar enthusiast in whom a love of the marque is deeply entrenched, the passion is complicated, personal and arrived at after a unique chain of events, from the CGS that was discovered by its owner as a teenager on an American farm in the 1950s, formerly the property of the estate’s homesick French gardener, to the example that gave its original racing-driver owner the surprise of his life when its restorer turned up unannounced at his house.
