From Tim Amyes of the Scottish Motor Museum Trust we received several evocative photos of an Arrol-Johnston that took part in the 1911 French Grand Prix. Its driver was Alec Wise (*) who joined Arrol-Johnston in Paisley in 1909. He became company test driver In 1911. Three cars were entered in the French Coupe des Voiturettes at Boulogne, he was reserve. In 1912 he was driver of one of three Arrol-Johnston's entered in the 1000 mile French Grand Prix. He finished fifth at an average speed of 56.4 mph. Subsequently he joined Hillman as a test driver. After retiring he came back to Hillman as test driver for the hush-hush Hillman Imp and he and Bill White drove Imp WHS 171 100,000 miles in one year all over Britain to prove its reliability.
(*) Can you tell us more about Alec Wise, or perhaps who's who in the photo of the three drivers?
From left to right - Renfrew who was Wise's riding mechanic in the 1912 GP de l'ACF/Coupe de L'Auto at Dieppe, then Wise, and Arrol-Johnston teammate Reid.
