We saw some very nice automobiles, although we were also attracted by this lovely model of a 1930’s Caltex service station in the ocean of models which traditionally is on show and for sale here. The car which inspired us most was the 1906(?) Gladiator. The car seems to have been built as hillclimb special back then, but nothing is known about its pre 19-fifties history when it was found near Dieppe, France. If you say Rétromobile, you automatically think Bugatti. And of course there was an ample choice: an exhibition like this great setup you will not see often. Both the Bonhams sale and the sale by Artcurial a few blocks away attracted both a handful Bugatti's and crowds of bidders from around the world. A pity the competing auction houses couldn't agree on a better timing. Now we had to run away from Bonhams before the best bits came, like the Type 43 that belonged to an extravagant collector, the late Pim Hascher. Despite our absence... it was hammered way over estimate. We didn't want to miss the sale of the mid thirties avantgarde icon, the 1935 Voisin C25 Aérodyne which was rightfully hammered (and applauded) at 460.000 Euros. The Voisin needs full recommissioning, but is very-very original and let's pray the new owner will not 'restroy' (restore=destroy) the interior. (RB & JB)
