Only one answer came in on last week’s quiz and just in time on 23:58 on Sunday evening. Fried Stol commented that he doubted between “a Mannesmann 5/20 limousine Type W II, built from 1923 till 1927 and a Hanomag 3/16 and 4/20 Limousine built in 1930”. I am afraid we have to disappoint you, as both answers are incorrect. But thank you very much for at least giving it a try. We will add 1 point to your account for participating. This will put you on the 2nd place in the six-month competition.

Now over to the car. The name of the pre-war we were looking for is Robert Serf.

These light cars were made in two models. Introduced in 1926, the 7CV with 1,470cc 4 stroke 4 cylinder engine. Available with two or four doors, a deluxe version, roadster and truck. And the 4CV powered by a 597cc 2-cylinder 2 stroke engine, which was introduced in 1933. These were available as an open two-seater or saloon.

This small car manufacturer originated from the Lorraine region in France. Robert Serf was the mechanic and Georges Didier the financier. Together they had around 25 employees who over the years built approximately 100 Robert Serf vehicles. The cars built in the "Serf en Didier" garage were: “légères, économiques et durables” (light, economical and sustainable). Mainly in the Meurthe-et-Moselle region, these pre-wars became very successful. They displayed the Robert Serf cars on various expositions in Paris and Nancy and participated in the Toul-Nancy race in 1928, where they became second. But still, they did not manage to become well-known nationwide let alone internationally. In 1935 they moved the workshop to Vandoeuvre and the business continued for a couple more year. Unfortunately, we have not much heard from them since.
