With regard to the recently posted Alfa for sale advert Jon Dudley is asking: "I'm a little worried that it sets a precedent for more of this type of ad which will take away one of the best features of the site...the pictures and descriptions. How boring it would become if we had to all register serious interest before we could see the car! Please don't think me rude but I would hate to see your site compromised by a rash of these ads."
This is what we answered: "I don't think you should fear a flood of text adverts coming in. We are not going to encourage this and will not allow free adverts in this set-up. And we think very few people will be enthusiast to pay full fare (36 Euro for a standard advert) for a text advert. At the same time we are enthusiast about the experiment undertaken by the seller of this fine car. Many high end cars are never advertised as their owners are afraid to 'damage' the value of their car by exposing it too much. Hundreds of cars are not being advertised at all just because of this reason alone. The text advert is taking away this problem, because nobody knows about which exact car the advertiser is talking." Do you like to express your opinion in this matter?

UPDATE IV by Jon Baker:"...it does concern me that there is a real risk that should we go back to the days of the "text only" advertisements, the only people who will respond are those who already make up the PreWarCar world.
There are so many who have at best a fleeting appreciation of the vehicles that interest your readers - we have the advantage of having seen, ridden in and/or driven some of them because many of us were growing up at a time when they were still regularly on the road.
Where are the enthusiasts of tomorrow coming from when the skills needed to keep a vehicle running now need a workshop full of electronic wizardry? Try and explain to an 18 year old about balancing pistons by hanging them up on a wire and listening to the sound they make when they are hit with the handle of a screwdriver. Or tuning twin SU's with a length of garden hose as one of the pieces of necessary equipment.
I cannot believe that a real enthusiast is suddenly going to find that a particular vehicle has lost its appeal and/or value because of the publication of a picture. On the other hand, I have the resources to be able to look up what a Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 with a Zagato body is all about. It's the people we want, and need, to make up the collectors and enthusiasts of tomorrow who don't have those resources we need to think about.
Not showing a picture of a vehicle for sale is a decision for the vendor, but I think that it is the same sort of thinking that motivates some to collect items (whether cars or pictures or jewellry) just to lock them away so nobody else has the opportunity to enjoy or appreciate them.
Thanks again for your website, I get a great deal of enjoyment and information from it. And of course what I have written above only represents my personal viewpoint, that we all need to do everything we can to encourage new and younger enthusiasts and collectors. If one picture is worth a thousand words, then more, not less, pictures please."
