The Left Hand Drive Delages Mystery

Peter Slootweg is a happy Delage D1 driver. At a recent PAC meeting we met and discussed the fact he has a LHD car. Peter himself wondered about this and so far has not found the answer except for one lead: "From a Delage-acquaintance I received a couple of pictures with Delages from the roaring twenties, all bodied by the house of Chavet. It appears (though I don't know for sure) that the body on my 1926 Delage D1 is also a Chavet. I noticed that all cars in those pictures are left-hand-drive. Also it seems that all cars were originally delivered in France." So was the LHD set-up a personal hobby of Mr. Marcel Chavet in Neuilly sur Seine? Or did he dream about export to the USA? Here's yet another LHD Delage...

There was a LHD Delage (red, torpedo) on the Rallye de etc Clubs de Marque run by Club Talbot at Chantilly in 2010. I asked the driver why it was LHD and was told he did not know. Apparently he attached little importance to it

The ability to convert relative simplicity was built into the design as the Delage DI series had a very good export market in England & to some extent Australia where LH drive was illegal unless you were a tourist & the car was re exported when you went back to the Continent.

My understanding is that the main reason that the French [in particular] started to drive on the right is simply because the British drove on the left.

Surely the purpose of allowing the customer to choose LHD and RHD was to differentiate between owner drivers and chauffeurs. Chauffeurs would need to sit nearer the kerb so they could swiftly step out and open the door for their passenger. You choose based on the country you're purchasing from. As cars have lost their bodies over the years, this may be less obvious.

I believe all DI cars (and probably other models such as DE and DR etc.) could be specified as either LH or RH drive. The requirement would have probably been as specified on the original order.
The steering box, plus stub-axles and steering / track arms are the main components that were different from RH to LH drive cars.
As far as I know, the "sports" versions; the DIS and DISS were only available in RH drive.

Our Delage DI is also a left hand drive car. Delivered new in France and in Holland since the 1970's.

DI series Delages were built with the basic built in facility to be either LH or Rh drive.

editor: do you know what they had in mind for either LHD or RHD ? Or was this a matter of personal preference in that time?
