The name Georg Autenrieth stands for quality coachbuilding from Germany. With his partner Franz Eisenlohr he founded Karosseriewerke Weinsberg in 1919, but left the company in 1921 to set up his own business: the ‘Erste Darmstädter Karosseriewerke’. He did well, especially with the cabriolets and tourers he built for Opel and Röhr (roehrauto.de). When BMW introduced its 326/327/328 series in 1936-37, Autenrieth became a prominent supplier. His company closed down in 1964, but many automobiles with a body by Autenrieth have survived. A prominent example is this attractive 1937 BMW 328 Cabriolet. We just love its skirted rear fenders and its luggage compartment, which opens from the top. A very nice detail is the landau irons that have the same deep red colour as the body. This snug and stylish BMW will be auctioned by RM at their Automobiles of Amelia Island Auction on March 14th to be held during the famous Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. (photos courtesy RM).
