D-d-d-d-deng,BANG-CRACK !

When the fan hits the sh... A small Talbot disaster. Last Friday we planned a drive out with the editorial limousine, the french Talbot. It was sunny and fine and nothing could stop us. The idea was to change location in order to make room for the Amilcar to go out. It's always an interesting job to drive the xxl Talbot backwards out of the small garage and into the narrow driveway with soft S-curve... (it's a long wheel base 1931 K78 Saloon). After having overcome this small challenge the driving lasted for another 4 miles until most unpleasant sounds started to develop under the bonnet. The results are pictured above. The top water lead which is also the cooling fan housing cracked open. This resulted the fast revving fan starting to look for a new position. On its way down it broke the waterpump house which was not in very good shape anyway. Also the ventilator itself broke in pieces. On its way out one of those tried to create an extra louvre on the right hand side of the bonnet.

No further adventures were needed for that day, so we decided to return home with the car. I pulled the remains of the ventilator out of the radiator core (no leak!), cut the fan belt and drove the car home (the waterpump kept in position with a tie-rap was still working). Back at the shop I had to conclude that we will need a new used waterpump(house), a top waterlead, a ventilator (this last item is the smallest problem and probably can be welded). Already we are in contact with the always extremely helpful friends of the Sunbeam Talbot Darracq Register. But these are relatively rare items, so we hope you can check your french Talbot spares. All parts from the M67, M75 and K75 series probably fit. And maybe even parts of the earlier DUS series. We hope to hear from you. The editorial Talbot likes to make a few more miles this summer!

Joris,
had the same Problem with my Talbot pump. I TIG welding it with Aluminium Silicon rod. Problem is the Talbot casting of the waterpump is pretty porous. If you have parts you need watertight, as I did add aluminium brazing. See here my pump http://www.schulz-projektierung.de/chassis_p75.htm
Cheers from the shop

Hi Joris.

Ouch that doesn't look good. With regard to the Water pump itself take a look and some measurements and compare it to the water pump of the Sunbeam 14/40. Although the outlet might be slightly different I managed to alter one to fit my 12/32 DC. the body size was the same and the holes lined up. I can send photos of what I did if necessary.

Regards Andy

Dear Joris, I am very sorry for your misfortune with the Talbot. If I would had the parts I would give them to you as a present because you do so much for all of us! Regards, Joop

If you cannot find the parts quickly, weld the water pump housing, fit an electric fan with a thermostat , this thermostat fits into the top hose & is held by the jubilee clip,
or run the car without a fan, many Talbots dont have a fan, possibly, export models to hot countries only had them fitted. anyway, you are lucky, I have seen fan blades come through the bonnett & Rad,

Joris - The pinch bolt method of attachment of the fan bearing is obviously a stress point (particularly if the fan bearing carrier is a bit loose in the casting) but I wonder if the fan broke first and the out of balance forces then broke the casting? I would not weld the old fan but seek another or even better use the original as a pattern to cast a new fan in high strength alloy, not just any old aluminium.

I worry about these old aluminum "ventilators" (fans) .

When you find a new one, make sure it is zyglow crack tested, and perfectly balanced.

At least the radiator remained unscathed. $$$ saved.
