A six year old kid at Christmas

Warren Henderson sends a compact report on the full monty overhaul of his Model T engine: " I just had a complete engine and transmission rebuild on my 1917 Model T Ford Canopy Express Delivery and it was well worth the time and money spent. When they pulled the crank all four pistons fell out! I had an egg shaped cylinder, a bent connecting rod and all the values were the original two piece style. The block was sent out, pressure washed, magnafluxed, board .060 over and milled. The head was also cleaned, check and machined. Harden value seats and value inserts added, along with 8 new one piece stainless steel valves and 8 valve springs and 8 nonadjustable push rods. Four new aluminum .060 pistons with new rings and 4 new connecting rods & rod oil dips, a new set of freeze plugs, front crank seal, rebabbited and a new copper head gasket. The transmission was torn down and completely rebuilt with all new bearings and bushings. The magneto was completely rebuilt and recharged. Now my T starts on the first crank and when warm it will start on magneto on the first crank as well! It sounds great and has a lot more power. I feel like a six year old kid at Christmas and can not wait to get out "on the road again"! Happy motoring everyone! " Warren Henderson

Thanks for all your comments. I did not mention that my old hogs head had no engine supports and Dick gave me one to replace it. I will retighten the head bolts shortly. Thank you all your help. Warren

What a superb job has been done here- Mr Henderson has a virtually new engine. I am struck by the 'lightweight' appearance of the crank- and the enormous pistons! Still, at only 1,600 rpm It was obviously robust enough, and that big, solidly supported centre bearing caught my eye. My 1933 Talbot produced well over twice the power from half the capacity- at 4,500rpm- such was 25 years of progress, but I doubt it would have survived the sort of 'uses and abuses' Model T Fords were famous for. Few cars would.

It's like Lee Iacocca said "if you can find a better car, buy it"
