A Scottish car mystery

We hope you all had a good weekend. Do you know what is so wonderful about it being Monday again? That today we have a new Monday Mystery for you!

We do not have a lot of information about this week’s mystery car. So that is why also this time we call for your help to solve the mystery. Walter who sent in this cut-out photograph was given the photo when he bought the remains of the pre-war car we see. The gentlemen standing next to the car is in all likely hood the chauffeur / driver of the car when it was used as a taxi in Inverness, a city in the Scottish Highlands. Here the car was operational up to 1935.

That is all we know really. Hence requesting more information. Please comment below.

Always suspected it was a Benz. What's why I bought it in the first place, but only recently found out the body was built in Edinburgh by Liddle and Johnston and the car was apparently used as a taxi in Inverness till about 1935. I was hoping to find out more about the coachbuilders as well as its life in Inverness and surroundings. The numberplate I don't have and not sufficient can be see on the photograph. The front of the passenger compartment has original curved glass which I think is very unusual for a vehicle of 1912, I am now restoring the car for it fell apart in transport. Bonnet, fenders, running boards, etc are all missing.

A very ambitious project - good luck! Maybe, its worthwhile to contact Dieter Dressel from the Central Garage in Bad Homburg/Germany, since he is a serious and knowledgeable collector of early Benzes and could be able to help... If you require his contact details please send me an email: [email protected]

Indeed it is a Benz, but the body was made in Edinburgh. The landaulet hinge mechanism has revealed the date of 1912.

So you already knew that the photos show a Benz and that the remnants of the car you bought are from the very Benz, as well?

I'd say it's a Benz from c.1912. I have attached a vintage photo from my collection showing a very similar Benz with landaulet body. I've flipped the print horizontally, hence the mirror-inverted German number plate...
