Has anyone seen this mascot before – or know of its origins? I have never seen one similar. The bird is cast in brass or bronze and nickel plated. It is obviously old and the nickel has lost its lustre with time. There is no makers name on or any signs of identity. It could of course be homemade, but I doubt it as the quality is good, and it would have been a time consuming job.
I found it in England recently, but it is likely French judging by the radiator cap which is touring Bugatti.

Further to my earlier note. The sculptor Hippolyte Francois Moreau (1832-1927, France) produced a large portfolio of work. His sculptures, from large to small, he was famous for his bronze statuettes of young women. He designed a number of car mascots, particularly of animals. I have found one of his pieces, of a Marabou Stork, that is very similar in design and style to the pelican e.g. the wing feathers (and glass eyes again). Photos attached. Too similar to be a coincidence? Moreau's work though is usually signed, and, I believe, those mascots signed Franjou were also by him (?) If you wish to research further, the above may be a good starting point.
Interesting mascot of a pelican and note the glass eyes. Not seen this one before, but I have seen mascots of other 'comical' animals, with glass eyes also. Two examples are shown, a dog smoking a cigarette and a cross-eyed bulldog. Both these however were made in spelter. Those I've seen have not been signed, have no markings to indicate the sculptor or manufacturer, nor have I seen any mascot catalogues of the 1920/30's specialising in these designs. I have seen a photo of a more serious study of an owl, a mascot by Varnier, and that used glass eyes too.
