A rare Chenard et Walcker: another victim of the banger tracks

We’ve written with a heavy heart about the banger racing of pre-1940 cars before, and although they have at last almost disappeared from the banger tracks, sadly one still slips through the net every now and then.  These pictures show a Chenard et Walcker being raced as recently as last September. Believed to be a F23 Aigle 22 of 1939, it’s a pretty rare car. From what we’ve read, this one had been raced before, somehow survived destruction, and was then built up and entered in a demolition derby once more.

The club’s Facebook page was surprised to see it, too: ‘This led to a massive search into what it actually was, as most Aigle 22's were two-doors and a lot of information isn't really available about this pre-war oddity. After a bit of digging we decided between us that it is likely an Aigle 22 Six Light Commerciale, though a Grand Luxe is also a possibility. There’s not much information online as to numbers produced either; in 1939 there probably weren't too many due to the Second World War starting later in the year. It had a Citroën four-cylinder engine in it, which made it an Aigle 22 rather than an Aigle Huit, though that had probably been changed as it would have been rather underpowered, you'd think.’

We don’t know how it ended for the Chenard, but do we want to? The fact is that the car seemed in a terribly bad condition, and might have been too rotten to save or restore. We would think the banger boys would be aware of its historic value, too?

I raced this one, there was not much left of it. I did have had it for sale in Belgium and Holland for more than six months but didn't have one person who was interested in it sadly. Maybe next time I will put it for sale here. If there was someone who was willing to take on the challenge to make it on the road again , than I was more than happy to sell the car.

I do still have the engine and gearbox from this one if there is someone interested.

I also keep a couple of old cars on the road, but I didn't have many parts to put this one on the road again… Not all banger drivers are terrible people that wreck cars - some of them have classic cars they keep on the road.

I do have one other pre-war car (a 1934 Citroën Rosalie) that in my opinion is not restorable but if someone wants to save it, it's for sale.

What a waste. Back in the '50s they had no real idea. Today they should know better.
Very sad!

This pitiful Chenard & Walcker Aigle 22 is not a Commerciale, whose body didn't have the extra boot but two rear hatches, one containing the rear window opening to the top, the other one to the bottom. By the way, that would have been the rarest version of all 1939 Aigles. This one was either a Grand Tourisme (five seats) or a Familiale (seven seats) which shared the same LWB six-window body with extra boot.

The car on its side looks like a Traction Avant.

One wonders whether the behaviour of these folks is so much different from those who buy perfectly viable saloons to turn into so-called specials and advertise the body on sites such as this...

There’s only as much value as someone is willing to pay for it.
And you could say it was used more honourably then some of the specials/lookalikes sold on this site.

Sadly the rarity and desirability of a car is a big attraction to these guys, although admittedly many of their cars are way beyond viable economic restoration.
