We’ve written with a heavy heart about the banger racing of pre-1940 cars before, and although they have at last almost disappeared from the banger tracks, sadly one still slips through the net every now and then. These pictures show a Chenard et Walcker being raced as recently as last September. Believed to be a F23 Aigle 22 of 1939, it’s a pretty rare car. From what we’ve read, this one had been raced before, somehow survived destruction, and was then built up and entered in a demolition derby once more.
The club’s Facebook page was surprised to see it, too: ‘This led to a massive search into what it actually was, as most Aigle 22's were two-doors and a lot of information isn't really available about this pre-war oddity. After a bit of digging we decided between us that it is likely an Aigle 22 Six Light Commerciale, though a Grand Luxe is also a possibility. There’s not much information online as to numbers produced either; in 1939 there probably weren't too many due to the Second World War starting later in the year. It had a Citroën four-cylinder engine in it, which made it an Aigle 22 rather than an Aigle Huit, though that had probably been changed as it would have been rather underpowered, you'd think.’
We don’t know how it ended for the Chenard, but do we want to? The fact is that the car seemed in a terribly bad condition, and might have been too rotten to save or restore. We would think the banger boys would be aware of its historic value, too?

I do still have the engine and gearbox from this one if there is someone interested.
I also keep a couple of old cars on the road, but I didn't have many parts to put this one on the road again… Not all banger drivers are terrible people that wreck cars - some of them have classic cars they keep on the road.
I do have one other pre-war car (a 1934 Citroën Rosalie) that in my opinion is not restorable but if someone wants to save it, it's for sale.
