A Paris Retro lunch mystery (UPDATE: ex-Dovaz photographed by Dingo)

Naturellement – when in France, you do as the French do. So don’t be tempted to grab a sandwich when at Rétromobile this weekend, but look out for the most lingering lunch available. You know the sort of thing – sausages and patés drenched in garlic, smelly cheeses and rustic breads plus plenty of wines to wash it down. You may even bump onto a scene like this on the actual show floor, with Bernard Ariztegui’s (stand number A062) at situ. Bernard is your man if you are looking for the better vintage (Bugatti) parts, but will transform his display into a scene from La Grande Bouffe at noon.

That brings us to the photograph above, sent to us with no thoughts about its origin. Is this scene for real or is it a set up? We don’t know, but would like to find out more about man and machine - a Type 57 or so it seems. Fact is that it does trigger the imagination. And with so many Bugatti connoisseurs around we reckon it shouldn’t take too long.

The car (Bugatti 57286) is the famous "Sleeping Beauties" Bugatti. It's shown on the cover photo of the Sleeping Beauties photo books (1986, 2007, 2013). The car hass been fully restored (by A. LeCoq) in the 1990s.
Our book "The Fate of the Sleeping Beauties" tells the history, fate and whereabouts of this Bugatti (and all other 50+ Sleeping Beauties) including 250+ photos. Although I must admit: this photo is not in the book, as the photographer asked too much money for it.

This is indeed a T57 from the Dovaz collection. The famous photo was staged with a fake tramp in the early 90's, soon after the car was purchased for 570,000 Francs, but before the car was exhibited half-restored by Lecoq at the 1994 Retromobile.
