Believe it or not but this fabulously patinated Mercer racing car is fully restored over the last year. Restoring engineer David Greenlees has spent a few thousand hours in bringing new life in this 1914 Mercer racer without ruining the touch of history which has painted it. When you inspect the car from close-by there is nothing or very little to find that will give away the massive amount of work invested. Still David is busy running it is ! Please enjoy David Greenlees' report and the view of the fully restored engine (click). "This automobile is a 1914 Mercer 35-J, the last production year of the T-Head engine. It has a wonderful provenance being fully documented from new with only four owners. The last being Peter Helck the famous automotiver artist who owned it from 1949 until his death in 1989 and then to his son Jerry. It was restored in 1941 by Sam Baily from Philadelphia and in the last 67 years has acquired a fine patina. I rebuilt the drive train with out disturbing it's appearance and have left the balance of the car untouched. I left home from Vermont to tow it to the Collier Museum for a museum symposium and after that to Amelia for the Concours on Sunday. It has been a great joy to drive it down here and break it in and adjust it. These cars are everything you may have read about them and perform incredibly well along with having a spectacular appearance. (photos David Greenlees)
