A New Moscow

It looks like a typical US street scene, but would you believe this is Moscow, 1937? It is! The painting depicts one of the favourite areas of Central Moscow: Sverdlov Square (now known as Teatralnaya Square, or theatre square). The painting, which gives the impression of a snapshot, was made by Yuri Ivanovich Pimenov, who in the 1930s made a series of canvasses about Moscow. But don't think the streets of 1930s Moscow were filled with pretty young girls driving open cars. The artist just wanted to show what was then thought a new lifestyle.
