Another picture from the seemingly endless collection of Harit from India. This one looks like a real gem. The photograph was taken in Mumbai (formerly Bombay) when the streets were still deserted. Just look at the beautiful wooden veranda supports on the building at the right. The car seems to be a classy one and it appears to be huge. Between the headlights there is a badge bar with some sort of unidentifiable script on it, which seems to be of something significant. On the radiator cap there’s also a big mascot that looks like a ships anchor. Perhaps the automobile belonged to someone in high office, but according to Harit this is not a Maharaja‘s car. The Mumbai registration was valid until around 1940. Can we help identify this car? Mail us!
Update by Frans Vrijaldenhoven, Theo Castricum and Peter Ransom who identified it as a DeSoto. Peter writes: “I feel this is a 1929 or 1930 DeSoto, perhaps an 8-cylinder car with fancy bodywork behind the unusual (for a DeSoto) windscreen. Key identifiers are the shape of the radiator shell, the curved bar between the headlights, the shape of the mudguards, typical American headlight/sidelight layout and the bumper style: two plain parallel bars.”
