A Monday Mansion Mystery (UPDATE: 1903/04 Panhard et Levassor)

Miss Purdy sent a beautiful photo and a cry for help: "We have recently acquired a photograph of a car which once belonged to the family that used to own our house (circa 1910). The car is seen in the photo being driven by the families chauffeur named as Charles Lee. We would love to know the make and model of the car but we don't know where to start!!" after asking she added " it is taken at Hatton Court, Hanslope, Buckinghamshire. We believe the car belonged to the Borrett family and is seen driven here by their chauffeur.

The radiator of course is the give away here, but when and where did we see this one recently...? Interesting of course is the BH-11 (?) registration, who can find back the details?  The car looks slightly older than the 1910 mentioned, more like 1904, or ? It is French in appearance - Darracq-ish we would say - and the atmosphere of the photo makes one think of the fine Renault as appearing in the Netflix series Dowton Abbey.

I think I have a photo with me of the many sisters of Claude Borrett. His name is mentioned on an old photo, stating that Claude was a POW and died in 1944. I am online trying to find his photo and names of his parent and relatives.

One more thing since nobody has mentioned it- the Early Bucks registration records right back to 1903 are (were?) stored at the County Records office, County Hall. Aylesbury. It might be worth contacting them to see if they reveal any more about BH 11?

Certainly a Panhard et Levassor. A photo and description of what could easily be the same car appears in William Worby Beaumont's 1906 edition of Motor Vehicles and Motors. He describes it as a 1905 model 8-11hp 3 cylinder.

It is also interesting to see that Claude Borrett appears to have had a chauffeur. Period reports describe him as "an enthusiastic automobilist" (Automotor Journal 1905) and he had a number of cars, including 2 Crossleys which he used to tour the continent. The second of these won a coachwork award in Monte Carlo in 1907

When UK registrations became a legal requirement from January 1st 1904, BH was allocated to the county of Buckinghamshire (not Luton - the code was reallocated in 1974). Most councils seem to have pre-registered cars during December 1903, so this car may be slightly earlier than the 1904 suggestions.

I am interested in the make of this car as I have parts which resemble the photo. I am interested in the make, model and type of engine.

The unusual and distinctive type of spark and throttle controls inside the steering wheel are distinctive Panhard-Levassor features, from this period (1904)

Three-cylinder 1904 Panhard et Levassor would be my guess.
