A militarised racing Mystery (update: SAVA !)

Martin Shelley sends this intriguing photo of a racing car spotted by him at he Museum of the First World War at Diksmuide in Belgium. "There is no informative caption of this car picture, and obviously the car is an old competition car which has been pressed into military service and has subsequently suffered damage and is lying abandoned somewhere on the western Front in Belgium or northern France. It would be nice to identify the car positively.  Maybe PreWarCar readers might help to recognise it." Our first thought was the car being a Peugeot GP, yet probably there are many arguments against that theory. So please fire your guns and give us your opinion.

I checked your suggestion, but the racer is without doubt a SAVA. If you compare the racer with the uploaded image of a 1914 SAVA you will agree. Increasing the brightness of the racer picture will reveal the 6 segmentation lines on the radiator core, similar to the 1914 SAVA. The roundness of the radiator then becomes more visible too, the Peugeot radiator being flat. Another convincing detail is the concave shape of the bottom of the radiator shell. Also the steering gear at the wheel is identical, and finally the front axle of the racer seems to be slightly curved (like the SAVA) and not straight (like Peugeot).

As I have a Peugeot 153a, I thought the same. straight front axle, very heavy robust rear axle and shape of the radiator and frame. But, without seeing a badge shape, I do have my doubts. I'll still vote for Peugeot.....cheers everyone! Keith

I am quite sure that the racing car is a SAVA (Société Anversoise pour la fabrication de Voitures Automobiles)The same make was present on the Front of river Yser (Flanders fields)with tanks(automitrailleuse)and the king of Belgium Albert 1° inspects the troups with an EXCELSIOR car

There is not much doubt, that this scene was photographed in Belgium. In the distance a ca 1912 Minerva can be seen. I'm inclined to think, that the damaged car is an Excelsior racer. It doesn't look like a war incident though, but more like the result of reckless driving by some flying ace. It is a well-known fact that WW1 aviators loved speedy cars.
