The stirring landscape of North Devon has generated many an impassioned novel. Among them Henry Williamson of Tarka the Otter fame. He wrote many novels featuring Georgeham village and included two pubs which he called the higher and lower hostelries. Today the Lower House continues to offer beer and victuals of the highest qualities. But more important… its walls are adorned with framed photos of early automobiles. We’ll show you some in the future, but for starters here’s the Squire’s Lady on her way to the Lower House. A most spirited, fearsome female, her chain-driven roadster carrying much road dirt and the evidence of many collisions. We haven’t a clue about the car’s origins. Who can help? (text & photos Rick Ford)
Update II by Jan Bruijn who guesses that the lady is driving an early two cylinder Star from Wolverhampton.
Update I by Daniel Geoghegan: "Henry Williamson was also well known, not just for his otter tales, but as the owner of an 1929 Alvis Silver Eagle tourer that he famously rolled on its side. The Alvis, bought new by Whitney Straight as his first car, was bought from Straight who, on going to University, was told that cars were forbidden. He sold the Alvis, and bought an aeroplane instead."
