Today it’s 110 years ago that the first airship designed by Graf Zeppelin took off for its inaugural flight. There were others, but in time his design was so successful that all airships became known as Zeppelins. Powered by Maybach engines they were seen as the transport mode of the future. Even the famous Empire State building in New York was designed to function as a docking station for the Zeppelins. The well-known Hindenburg crash meant an end to the golden era but since the 1990s the Zeppelins are back using new technology.
