Martin Shelley came up with these interesting pictures of a fine solid tyred Karrier charabanc on what was referred to in Scotland as "A grand day oot!". He writes: Scotland being noted for its scenic beauty, many coach trips were organized to give the working man a taste of the scenery as a break from the drudgery of his working life. These pictures were probably taken by a passenger on such a day trip to the famous Trossachs, north of Glasgow and the start of the spectacular scenery on view quite close to the industrial metropolis famed as the workshop of the British Empire in Victorian days.
The Karrier charabanc was operated by a local coach firm from Kilmarnock, famous as home of the Johnnie Walker whisky distillery. It was registered in Lanarkshire in 1914 but the pictures were probably taken postwar (WW I that is). One picture shows the still thriving King's House Hotel. The hotel is situated near the Braes o'Balquidder, immortalized by the weaver poet Robert Tannahill 200 years ago and still one of the most popular Scottish folk songs. The wild blueberry bushes on the braes (as the nearby hillside was known) gave the visitors a tasty reminder of their 'day oot', wi' stained fingers to match their tongues!
