A German Dixi Mystery? (update: Dixi?)

Robert Hotzan sent us these photos and wrote: "I bought this chassis from a BMW enthusiast...like me. The seller suggested that the chassi possibly is form Dixi in the period 1910 - 1920. I am looking for any information to find out to which car belongs this frame? First I thougt it is from Dixi (editor: not to be confused with the US built Dixi like the one restored by bernie Jakobson). But for sure there are various other possibilities. I don't want to mention those at this moment in order not to influence any other suggestions or hints."

It's not a lot of information that you give Robert, so don't be surprised if this is going to take a little more time than you were hoping for. What we can do at least is check with an early Dixi owner we know not too far from here.

I have serious doubts about Dixi, at least until WW1. If you look at the R12 you'll notice a fully curved front axle, not just the center part. Also the lower side of the radiator is curved (like earlier Dixi models and many other German makes at the time) and the radiator support is curved as well. Finally the front dumb irons have a different curve too. In my opinion you'll have to look for a car having a radiator with a straight lower side, probably with oblique corners. The rear spring system with the down-curved chassis extension could be a valuable id-feature too, by the way.

There is a 1914 Dixi in the National Motor Musem Collection in South Australia. If you type in the Museum you will find it. It was owned by Len Vigar for many years before belonging to the Museum. The front axle looks as though they could be the same. Back in the 1960's I had a look at the remains of another Dixi here in Victoria, but as an 18 year old I didn't buy it. It had a radiator and was all there mechanically except for the chassis frame. I was never sure what happened to it but I assumed rightly or wrongly that it ended up with Len.
