“A celebration of pre-war motorsport, set within the historic Grimsthorpe Castle estate in Lincolnshire”

As in previous years, Vintage Speed Trials are running a speed trial in the bucolic splendour of Grimsthorpe Castle. The event, sponsored by Brewin Dolphin and H&H Auctions, evokes the nostalgia of early gatherings. Curated as a celebration of the charm of pre-war cars and motorcycles, Vintage Speed Trials transports guests back in time to the pioneering days of British motorsport.
Throughout the day, between 10am to 4pm, 100 pre-war cars & motorbikes take turns to run down the track three times.

On the packed schedule is an array of spectacular vehicles including Bugattis, MGs, ERAs, Maserati and a number of Edwardian cars. Not only can you see these cars in action, with all the excitement, the sounds and the smells, you can also get up close to the vehicles and talk to owners and drivers in the paddock. Adding to the charm is a thoughtfully arranged display of classic vehicles, artfully parked to encourage the visitor to meander amongst them, whilst daydreaming of the halcyon pre-war days. A vision of world that disappeared with the arrival of World War Two.

Dressing up isn’t just for children and visitors and participants are encouraged to wear 1930s dress to add to the atmosphere. Why not bring a picnic and feast amongst the ancient trees or take advantage of a variety of local food and drink stalls.

Entrants for the track runs are fully booked but there is still an opportunity to apply to display vehicles in the impressive Vanbrugh courtyard at the front of the castle. Owners of pre war vehicles, are invited to get in contact.

Following the death of the founder of Vintage Speed Trials, Richard Powell, the team remain devoted to reviving the spirit of pre-war speed trialling. We aim to uphold Grimsthorpe’s rich legacy of motorsport, which began in 1903 with the first timed runs in the old deer park, hosted by the Lincolnshire Automobile Club. Under the guidance of Mel Hart, who upholds Richard’s legacy with passion, this wonderful day promises to be a treat for all the senses.

Tickets for visitors are on sale at the website where there is also a wealth of information about the fascinating history of speed trials.

Due to the nature of the event, regretfully no dogs are allowed.
