A Canadian Girl in Dutch Resistance

Just another happy couple posing beside their Bugatti Type 57. That's what we thought when we were about to type an article telling you about the virtues of a red Ventoux that will be auctioned by Motorclassica. But as always we did some checking and with the help of Hispano-Suiza expert Hans Veenenbos we stumbled upon a terrific story that pales the Bugatti. You see, the couple are Dutch businessman Willem Leonhardt and his Canadian wife Mona Parsons. Willem Leonhardt was born into a well-to-do family. He lived a luxurious lifestyle and owned a series of exclusive automobiles like Voisin, Hispano-Suiza H6B and this Bugatti. In 1937, on a business trip to Canada, Willem met and later married Mona Parsons who went with him to Holland. (continue at Read More)

Rutger. Thank you for the article about Mona Parsons. As a result I've bought the book and just finished reading it. What a dreadfull time for the Dutch people and what bravery was shown.
Yours

How breathtakingly ignorant of any one to think that all cars should be kept in the original specification of the day that they left the factory.Cars are made for people to use and in doing so they create history. If a car is returned to original condition much of the history created is completely obliterated.Famous and not so famous people create important and not so important history with thrir cars, we should strive to keep that intact.
It would be better to ask questions like why was this car painted Grey AFTER the war? How many other cars were fitted with turn signal blinkers in 1938?

We are fortunate that in the past there were such people of real substance, not just style, whose values they stood for put them in harm's way and who acted despite their imminent danger. We are moral midgets by comparison.

What a story. Reminds me of the words at the Kohima WW-II cemetary in India "For Your Tomorrow We Gave Our Today". Well done Bob.

Well done Rutger. Mona's story is indeed fascinating and I am pleased to see that readers can access her biography, written by Andria Hill (who sent me the photo of the Ventoux), via the link you provided. This was already my 10th article in a series on HISPANOS IN THE NETHERLANDS for the Newsletter of the Hispano-Suiza Society. In the past I have done many more great articles, among them 13 articles on THE HISPANO-SUIZAS OF THE INDIAN PRINCES and a raid from Paris to Cape Town by three French students in 1935 with a Hispano with Labourdette coachwork which had once belonged to Mrs. Deutsch de la Meurthe. This car was found in the 1950s in poor condition in Kenia and now survives in Switzerland.

A wonderful story but what a shame the Bugatti wasn't restored to it's original spec.(colour wheel discs etc).Red? Why do people do that?
Graham.
